Webwise: Safer Internet Day 2011

internet safety image Today, Tuesday 8th February, we are joining with 65 countries around the world by marking Safer Internet Day 2011. In Ireland, we have been supporting this initiative of the EU Safer Internet Programme since 2004. Participation has been steadily growing, with key safety messages reaching more and more children every year.

This year in Ireland parents are being called on to “Get Webwise! – Get Involved!”.

Webwise on Facebook

facebook imageTo mark Safer Internet Day 2011 in Ireland, a new online resource has been launched to help parents to get involved in what their children are doing online. The single most important thing a parent can do to help keep their children be safer online is to engage with them on the topic. Webwise on Facebook has been developed to support parents to start the conversation with their children about what they do online.

Webwise: Parenting Events

parent imageThe National Parents Council County Branches in partnership with the NCTE will be delivering internet safety workshops for parents around the country. The sessions focus on strategies for improving communication between parents and children and negotiating boundaries to their internet use.

Webwise: Talks in Schools

workshop image‘Safer Internet: Talks in Schools’ will take place in schools across the country throughout the month of February. Thousands of students will participate in these internet safety workshops which will highlight personal safety issues that may arise for children while using the internet including risks associated with online interactive services like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and MSN Messenger.
